Incoming First-Year Students

Welcome to the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences! We look forward to working with you as you embark on your new academic journey. At the University of Pittsburgh, academic advising is required, and we place great emphasis on the advising process and relationship. Below, you will find the steps you will need to follow prior to coming to campus. 

First-Year Student Checklist: Admitted for Fall Terms

  1. Sign up for a PittStart session immediately.
  2. Determine if you have to take any placement exams.
  3. Complete online placement exams beginning May 1, 2017. 
  4. Complete the online orientation after you receive the welcome letter from the Director of Advising.  
  5. Complete the online orientation in CourseWeb (Blackboard), which enables you to schedule your fall courses.

First-Year Student Checklist: Admitted for Spring Terms

  1. Determine and complete any placement exams. Please complete and submit before you call to schedule an advising appointment. (See step 3 below)
  2. Complete and submit the online orientation at least three days prior to the advising appointment that you are attending.
  3. Call the Advising Center at 412-624-6444 to schedule an individual advising appointment.

Next Year's FAFSA Available Now

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) became available on October 1, 2016 for the 2017-18 academic year. This is the most important form to complete in order to qualify for almost all types of financial aid. Visit the Federal Student Aid Web site to access the online application and find many helpful tips.
