Hi everyone! My name is Ava, and I am from New York! I’m a senior majoring in Microbiology in the Honors College on the pre-med track. I am also pursuing a minor in Chemistry and French, as well as certificates in Conceptual Foundations of Medicine and Public Communication of Science and Technology. I’m passionate about health equity and science writing for a general audience, and I’m grateful to have been awarded an FHC Fall Community-Engaged Research Fellowship to develop educational materials to improve health literacy for the Kidney Disease Screening Awareness Program (KDSAP) screening events. I started wet-lab research during my sophomore year in the Subramanya Lab at the School of Medicine, where we study kidney-electrolyte molecular biochemistry. I was fortunate to spend this past summer in the lab as part of a Summer Undergraduate Research Program, where I was able to dive full-time into the research and clinical aspects of kidney care and conclude the summer with a research presentation. I hope to present my work at a conference next semester! A fun fact about me: I earned my NREMT certification and plan to work for a Street Medicine program or as an EMT for a few years before medical school.
