First-Year Friendly Courses

How to Find Recommended Courses for First-Year Students

Welcome to the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh! We’re excited to have you join our campus community and look forward to supporting your academic journey.

Before you proceed below, please make sure that you have already completed at least Steps 1, 2, and 3 on our New Student Advising page.

To help you get started, our academic advising team has collaborated with departments across the Dietrich School to create a list of First-Year Friendly courses (Pitt login required). These are excellent options for new students, and we encourage you to:

  1. Review the Course List: Explore recommended courses and read their descriptions in HighPoint CX.

  2. Submit Your Preferences: After reviewing the list, complete the brief course preference form to share your interests with your academic advisor.
Please note that course availability can change, and specific sections or instructors may fill up.

We also encourage you to connect with our Peer Advisors—either by attending an info. session or scheduling a one-on-one meeting—to ask questions about courses, instructors, and planning your studies.

If you need assistance, feel free to contact us at advcentr@pitt.edu or (412) 624-6444. We’re here to help and look forward to working with you!
